Dependency Determination

For the 2013-2014 academic year, you're considered an independent student ONLY IF at least one of the following criteria applies to you (the student). If none of these criteria apply to you, you're considered dependent. However, a financial aid advisor can make a determination of independence with documentation of special circumstances, even if you initially filed as a dependent student.
You were born before January 1, 1990?
At the beginning of the 2013-2014 school year, you will be enrolled in a master's or doctoral degree program (such as MA, MBA, MD, JD, PhD, EdD, or graduate certificate, etc.).
As of the date you apply, you are married or separated (but not divorced).
Do you have one or more children who receive more than half of their support from you between July 1, 2013 and June 30, 2014?   (dependent help)
You have dependents (other than children or spouse) who live with you and who will receive more than half of their support from you, now and through June 30, 2014?   (dependent help)
As of the date you apply, will you be an emanicipated minor or in legal guardianship as determined by a court in your state of legal residence OR when you were age 13 or older, were both your parents deceased or were you in foster care or were you a dependent/ward of the court?   (dependency status help)
As of the date you apply, you are serving on active duty in the U.S. Armed Forces, or are a National Guard or Reserves enlistee called into federal active duty for other than training purposes.
Are you a veteran of the U.S. Armed Forces?   (veteran help)
Has it been determined that you are an unaccompanied youth who is homeless or are self-supporting and at risk of being homeless or are you unable to submit parental information for another reason?   (Help me decide)
