  1. What is the Financial Aid Advisor and how do I use it?
The Financial Aid Advisor is an interactive tool designed to find financial aid options people can use to pay for education and training. The tool asks a series of questions and creates a profile of financial aid resources. To use the tool, you will need tax returns, details about Social Security and other government benefits you receive, and other financial statements. See the instructions for more information about the documents you will need. Audio Highlights are also available to introduce students to critical information to consider as they prepare for education after high school. Audio Highlights will also introduce them to other resources (Web sites and Braille and print publications) that provide more details relating to each topic listed in the contents. Audio Highlights can be found at www.FederalStudentAid.ed.gov/audio.

  2. What information does the Financial Aid Advisor provide?
The Financial Aid Advisor creates financial aid profiles based on answers to a series of questions. This tool compiles information about scholarships, loans, financial aid program options, and other resources. It contains detailed information about programs offered by agencies such as the U.S. Department of Education, U.S. Department of Labor, the Internal Revenue Service, the U.S. Armed Forces, state departments of higher education, and AmeriCorps, as well as information about eligibility guidelines and the application process.

  3. What is the source of information for the Financial Aid Advisor?
Financial aid data come from a variety of sources. The Financial Aid Advisor uses Pell grant maximum award information, formulas, and data tables provided by the U.S. Department of Education. State contact and program information is gathered from each state's higher education websites. Other information is gathered through Internet research.

  4. What is the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA)? What is the deadline for filing a FAFSA?
The Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) is the application used to determine a student's eligibility for federally subsidized loans, grants, and work-study funds. The FAFSA should be completed by any one who wants an education beyond high school and might need help paying for that education.

Detailed information about and important deadlines for the FASFA can be found on the FASFA website.

  5. What are tips for finding financial aid?
    • Start your searching early and allow plenty of time.
    • Check out resources in the Financial Aid Center.
    • Use the Scholarship Search and the Financial Aid Advisor to find more options.
    • Become familiar with the process, follow it closely and keep an eye on important deadlines.
    • Examine all of the options and narrow them as you go.
    • Contact the financial aid office at the schools you are considering to see if they have any special programs you might be eligible for.
